We took the bikes, kayaks and trailer to Shadow Mountain Lake on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park last weekend. It is really beautiful. Our daughter , husband and grandchildren had their first experience at kayaking and just loved them. My feeling is that if you get the kids interested in camping or boating early in their life they will in turn want to take their kids when they become adults.

Years ago I spent a weekend in the fire tower at Shadow Mountain because a friend was a ranger manning the tower that summer. A storm came in and lightning was flashing all around us. A great experience.

The fish and game department has a spawn shack built over the stream between Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain lake. When the kokanee salmon are spawning they just reach down with a big net, bring them up into the shack and milk the fish for sperm and eggs. If you have a fishing license and cooler they will give you twenty five kokanee to take with you.
